Ebru Ceylan An Eternal Moment

14/01/2020 - 10/02/2020

Ekavart Gallery

EKAV / Education, Culture, and Research Foundation hosts the exhibition of the photography of Ebru Ceylan, An Eternal Moment, as the first exhibition of the year, from 14 January to 10 February, at Ekavart Gallery.

The photographer focused on the human's inner world in her artistic practice before. Inspired by the concept of "sublimity", Ebru Ceylan now pursues "sublime", which she believes to be immanent in nature.

Immanuel Kant's "Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime", the source of inspiration to the exhibition, consists of comparative critical thoughts on the concept of "sublime". In his inspirational work, Kant distinguishes between the sublime and the beautiful. He leaves the beautiful in the realm of aesthetics but breaks the sublime off aesthetics and moves it to the realm of the moral. In other words, he separates it from the sensible, objective, finite, and desirable and introduces it to the realm of the intuitive, infinite, undefined, and eternal.

For Kant, the feeling of sublime is a cosmological reverence in the face of that which transcends the bounds of senses, is incomprehensible, neither itself can be possessed nor the knowledge of which can be fully grasped and is undesirable.

A beautiful scenery evokes pleasure, but the sublime despair, disquiet, and even pain.

In addition to photography, Ebru Ceylan's fourth personal exhibition features a video-art and a lightbox with sound installation. On the desolate terrains without a trace of human life, the artist pursues "An Eternal Moment" that may belong to the feeling of "sublime", that may represent it.
