About

Tufan Baltalar was born in Edremit in 1972. He graduated from Dokuz Eylül University from the department of Fine Arts in 1994.

Baltalar who regards paintings and sculptures as elements of a long lasting project, is mainly interested in the accumulation of his work. He holds the opinion that the whole body of all these pieces together comprises constituents that may be utilized to grasp what an ‘individual’ is. He turns everyday materials into unlikely forms and textures through techniques he improved in the course of time. Rather than focusing on the outcome, he prefers to underline the paths and traces to follow so as to get to the desired result. Among his works may be cited incomplete or fragmented moments/individuals, a small plot of land covered with bushes, and the rustling sounds amidst silence. Although his work transforms through new experimentations he renders each piece familiar by integrating his own face and body into the production process.

The artist who opened solo exhibitions titled Surrounded By (2018), Stand by (2015), In between (2012), Viewing Terrace (Outlet Gallery), participated in recent group exhibitions including Çanakkale Biennial, Digging on the Shore, Summer Resort for a Song, Emergency Exit at Outlet Independant Art Space (Istanbul), Be a realist, demand impossible at Karşı Sanat (Istanbul), Plastic Tree Vol. I at Dirimart (İstanbul), Air Pocket at Galerist (Istanbul), Alis vs. Alis at Kasa Gallery (Istanbul), Rainbow and Boredom at Akbank Art Gallery (Istanbul) and also made his solo exhibition Room 243 at K2 Contemporary Art Center (Izmir).
