About

Serkan Taycan (1978) is a researcher-artist and academician with a background in engineering and photojournalism. In addition to completing his master's degree in Sabancı University Visual Arts and Photography departments of Helsinki Aalto University, he continues his doctorate in Architecture Theory program at Carleton University (Canada).

In his research-based work, he focuses on the dynamics of urban and ecological transformation. He uses photography, video, mapping and walking in his work. In 2013, he initiated the walking route ‘Between Two Seas’, which allows participants to experience the threatening transformation of Istanbul. His work has been exhibited in institutions such as Venice Architecture Biennale, Istanbul Biennial, Helsinki Photography Biennale, Sinop Biennale, Cappadox, Thessaloniki Photography Biennale, as well as SALT, Istanbul Modern, Pera Museum, MAXXI, MuCEM, Malmö Museum.

He has given lectures in the subjects of city, geography and visual arts at Istanbul Bilgi University and Bahçeşehir University. He attended Cité des Arts, Paris in 2015 and Delfina Foundation, London artist residency programs in 2016. He has taught and directed workshops at institutions such as the Icelandic Academy of Art (Reykjavík), the Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology (Bangalore) and Leeds University of the Arts.

He is a member of the artist collective, RecCollective. He lives and works in Istanbul.
