About

Born in 1979 in Hanau, Germany, Serkan Sarıer graduated from Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 2001. He completed his postgraduate studies at Goldsmiths University of London in 2018.

The artist, who has a wide portfolio ranging from canvas to video, says, “What if we exist too far from the community we associate with our identity? What if our selves, ethnicity, gender, and the identity we carry from our environment are disconnected, which would mean a loss?” He goes after his questions and in his works he questions the state of not belonging somewhere, space, identity and human relations. With his works, Sarıer opposes stereotypes such as sexual identity, ethnicity and religious differences. The artist processes the personal 'state of alienation' in his works by turning the figures away from their unique forms and transforming them into a fluid appearance. For Sarıer, this transformation is a symbol of separation from identity groups that restrict the social self.

Serkan Sarıer lives and works in New York.
