Richard Wilson
About
Born in London in 1953, Richard Wilson studied at the London College of Printing, Hornsey College of Art and the University of Reading. The artist became internationally known for his interventions in architectural spaces inspired by the fields of construction and engineering. He filled the gallery space with oil for his most well-known work, his impressive installation “20:50”. The iconic installation, which transports the viewer to this oil-encrusted area on a walk, was described by art critic Andrew Graham Dixon as 'one of the masterpieces of the modern age'. Included in the Saatchi Collection in 1987, "20:50" was sold by Charles Saatchi to David Walsh in 2017. The work is still in the Museum of Old and News Art – M.O.N.A., founded by Walsh. is in the collection.
Wilson is known for his interesting spatial installations and innovative interpretations of sculpture. Although produced specifically for spaces, his works, which can be adapted to different areas, focus on the nature of materials used in daily life and the relationships between them. Combining architecture and engineering in his works, he captures different perspectives and balances.

In his more than 30-year career, Wilson has held important, international museum exhibitions and public art works both in his country and in many countries in Japan, the USA, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Australia and Europe. He has also represented the UK at the Sydney, Sao Paulo, Venice and Aperto Biennale, and the Yokohama Triennale. Nominated twice for the Turner Prize, Wilson was awarded the DAAD Residency in Berlin in 1992 1993. One of the few artists to have public art commissioned for The Millennium Dome, Wilson is the only British artist invited to attend the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial 2000 in Japan.
