Michael Sailstorfer

About

Michael Sailstorfer was born in 1979 in Velden, Germany. After completing her art education at Munich Fine Arts Academy, she continued her graduate studies at Goldsmiths University of London and graduated in 2004.

Known for his field-specific interventions, the artist aims to give new meanings and functions to objects by challenging traditional sculpture principles with his works. Much of Sailstorfer's work is based on revealing the physical elements of an object, breaking it apart. From car tires to popcorn machines or trees, Sailstorfer reinterprets everyday objects with poetic and often absurd interventions. The familiar objects he uses in his works are systematically stripped of their original functions and acquire alternative meanings in different contexts. Michael Sailstorfer, who makes experimental works beyond physicality by using smell, sound and light, continues to create in painting, performance, photography and film environments besides sculpture and installation.

The artist lives and works in Berlin.

Artist's works, Center Pompidou (France), Fondazione Morra Greco (Italy), Jerry Speyer (USA), Leopold Hoesch Museum (Germany), Mariano Pichler Collection (Italy), MARTa Herford (Germany), MUSEION (Italy), Museum Kurhaus Kleve (Germany), Paolo Kind (England), Sammlung Boros (Germany), Sammlung Goetz (Germany), Städel Museum (Germany) and Walker Art Center (USA) are included in the collections of many prestigious art institutions.
