Gözde Mimiko Türkkan

Gözde ‘Mimiko’ Türkkan (b.1984) lives and works in Istanbul.

Mimiko mostly produces photography series, artist’s books and videos. Through a subjective documentary approach, her works focus on gender roles and socially constructed identities while attempting to shed light to some of the deepest drives, desires and fears of the human being; aim to raise questions about gender stereotypes, prejudgements, social roles, power relations and how these are manipulated. Mimiko also emphasises the human body as the most common outward manifestation of the sexual, psychological, emotional and sociological identity. 

After receiving her BA degree in 2008, Mimiko worked as a photography course instructor in the Visual Communication Design Department of the same university. She completed her education in the University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design where she received her MA Fine Art degree in 2010.

Selected solo shows include; Sedüksiyon (Bilsart, Istanbul, 2020), Jeu des Portraits en Famille (Center Intermondes, La Rochelle, 2018), Wish Tree (The Empire Project, Istanbul, 2015), Baktim Sana (Operation Room, Istanbul, 2011).

Mimiko participated to Video Forever 40 (Paris, 2019), Beau Ideal (Pilot Gallery, Istanbul, 2019), Louisville Photo Biennial (21c Museum Hotel, Louisville, 2017), Landskrona Fotofestival (Sweden, 2014), Every Inclusion is an Exclusion of Other Possibilities (SALT, Istanbul, 2015), Close Quarters (Istanbul Modern, 2013), Dissecting & Patching (Vol de Nuits, Marseille, 2011), Unseen Photo Fair (Amsterdam, 2013), Art HK11 (Hong Kong, 2011), !f Istanbul Indipendent Film Festival (2007), Atelier AMI Residency (Geneva, 2020). Her works are in many national and international collections.
