Deniz Ezgi Sürek

Deniz Ezgi Sürek (b.1990, İstanbul) graduated from Yildiz Technical University, Department of Photography and Video. Afterward, she completed her master’s degree in the Department of Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design at Sabanci University in 2018. Her works are exhibited in Base 2018 and Dali Photography Festival 2019 (China). She lives and works in İstanbul.

Deniz Ezgi Sürek is interested in hybridity as a notion that challenges boundaries and categorization. For the artist; the notion of hybridity can be used in any discipline, suggesting impurity that arises from the mixture of different elements. In her practice the bodies we are confronted with are grotesque, as Mihail Bakthin defines, ‘’...never finished, never completed; it is continually built, created, and builds and creates another body”. This definition helps us understand why collage is the ideal medium for the artist as she utilizes the possibilities of photomontage as a way of constructing an alternate world where strange bodies reside in desolate landscapes, continually rebuilding themselves in new ways of corporeal existence.
