Ali Cabbar
About
Born in Istanbul, Ali Cabbar graduated from Marmara University, Faculty of Fine Arts. In 1988 he settled in Melbourne, then Brussels, where he attended the engraving and lithography workshop of the RHoK Academy for three years. In addition to his art production, he worked as a graphic designer, illustrator and art director for the Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune and Herald Sun.
He has been the subject of many of his works since his first exhibitions in 1987 in Istanbul and 1989 in Melbourne. The 2010 exhibition "The Restless Shadow" at Yapı Kredi Culture and Arts reflects Turkey's personal reckoning with its political past. The 2016 exhibition at Depo Istanbul provides a graphic look at Turkey's political history through party emblems and posters. In his research-oriented project "ELDORADO: A Wor(l)d Game", which he showed at the Split Museum of Fine Arts in 2019, he examines the role of the artist in urban gentrification, starting from Dolapdere. In his 20-year project "MONSTER", which he showed for the first time in Istanbul Adas in the same year, he approaches GM food products as a contemporary Still Nature. Yanköşe, a 2020 site-specific installation in the field of contemporary art "I Shot the Last Rhino", as an urban area project of human nature. question its impact.
Ali Cabbar deals with political and social issues in a non-didactic tone in his works that he produces using different techniques. He enriches his narration with black humor and symbols. It provokes the viewer to reveal what is hidden behind the visible. The artist, who spends most of his time in Brussels and partly in Istanbul, continues his production in both cities.
