It was founded by Selin Söl in 2008 as a non-profit art platform in Cihangir. In the first two years of its establishment, it focused on the thematic group exhibitions organized by curators and artist-curators and the visibility of young artists. As of 2010, Daire Sanat assumed a commercial gallery format in order to increase its support to young artists and to contribute to their art careers by presenting their “first solo exhibitions”. In 2010, it moved to Tophane Boğazkesen Street and continued with the representation of up and coming artists.
Among the artists who took part in Daire Sanat events with their curatorial works or solo exhibitions starting from 2008 are Gül Ilgaz, Genco Gülan, İsmet Doğan, Mehmet Ali Uysal, Volkan Aslan, Sena Başöz, Ardan Özmenoğlu, Elçin Ekinci, Anna Heidenhain, Anita Bacic, Fırat Neziroğlu, İrem Tok, Mustafa Pancar, Evrim Kavcar, Hera Büyüktaşçıyan, Balca Ergener, Didem Özbek, İz Öztat, İbrahim Koç, Turan Aksoy, Hayal İncedoğan, Peter Tzanev, Evren Erol, Volkan Kızıltunç, Orhan Cem Çetin, Cemre Yeşil, Özge Enginöz, Osman Bozkurt, Perform Istanbul, and CANAN.
As of 2017, Daire has aimed to develop a dynamic structure similar to its founding mission by moving away from a commercial gallery format in its new location in Cihangir. Daire Sanat continued its program by developing exhibitions which present the approaches of curators and artists to exhibition practices, independent projects and collaborations, speeches and activities on art and sociocultural issues.
As of November 2019, Daire Sanat transforms the exhibition venue in Cihangir into artists studios to be used by selected artists for a certain period of time. The artist participating in the program will be able to continue his/her works in the venue, which she/he has transformed into her own studio environment, for a period of two to four months required to complete the project. The studio will be open to visiting and the artist will be present two days a week in order to preserve the dynamics of the exhibition program that the gallery has continued for twelve years. On the days when the studio is open to visitors, they will have the opportunity both to get to know the artist and to witness the project process. The participant artist will complete the programme with an event to be held in the venue at the end of the project. The Programme started in November 2019, and an Open Call for application was announced in January 2020.
